There are certain things that one accepts as fundamental to a certain process but when you actually question its relevance, you might be amazed by the irrelevance of such a 'fundamental' thing. They say that it is human being who converts a rock into a divinity through his belief (not referring to the literal handiwork that may be involved too!). So, here we are with one such fundamental and its relevance - the Admit Card! There are times and there are situations like appearing for a mass exam like MAT/CAT where no one knows any one and it is more of a compulsion than a choice that candidates have to carry a properly validated photo-id or an admit card. Also, it is one way of making sure that anyone who lacks some technical or documentary eligibility criteria, gets screened out. So, that is how we treat an Admit Card as an instrument that is fundamental to the working of above mentioned system.
Now, lets transpose the above description into ground realities of EBS. Every one knows everyone (including all the staff, faculty, security, admin..... and if someone does not know some of us, either he/she does not want to know or there is something wrong somewhere. With the healthy (and desired) culture of multi-tasking as prevelant at EBS, there is hardly any scope for any one of us not to know or recognise other members of the fraternity. So, where does the relevance of an Admit Card come in here? And then in a wi-fi campus that has many a thing that is state-of-the-art, do we still need to carry those funny looking printouts? Have a look at that of mine......ain't you reminded of "Memoirs of an Invisible Man?''.........
So, when everyone knows everyone, the other issue left is that of eligibility. There are many simple ways like putting up a notice on ERP or on a notice board well in advance or simply barring the entry into the examination hall. And for those who are eligible, isn't it a better option to have the card on your mobile phone or tab/pad and you may flash it to gain entry and that is it...........!!
And if we have to contribute to a healthy cause, more than "Who is saving papers" what is important is ''Whether any paper is being saved or not?''
More than environmental issues, what bothers us the most is the need to display the card on daily basis and that too on your table! This is something we need to really consider once, at least. What is being achieved? Ain't we a closely knit fraternity who is well aware of the situation around? If after the first exam (all doubts granted), no one needs to be blocked, do we still need this piece of paper? And for what? I would rather insist on EBS identity card that, somehow, no one cares to carry. That is a more useful piece of equipment and would work well for the establishment. It is the best 'on person' advertisement of the school whether it is in a metro station or inside the Pizza Hut. There is a need to shift our focus a bit rather than being adamant about things that are as irrelevant as an LP record today!
Moving on..... the choice of the new exam hall is really nice. Whosoever had this idea flashing through his/her mind, deserves an appreciation. Firstly, it looks and feels like an examination hall and not merely a class room or some other room that gets converted into one on need basis. The furniture , lights, ambience is all nice. May be if we can provision a loo somewhere at the same level, it will help. If nothing else, it will prevent some avoidable consultations upstairs when students do go up for a leak or on the pretext of a leak. I am sure with time, if it becomes a permanent fixture, some more furniture, some work on the ceiling and we have a great asset at hand. Once seating capacity is made up, there would be lesser need to have supervisiory staff.
Today was one of the papers that was probably the most feared one. But it went off well for most of us! Life, in any case, moves on!!
See you tomorrow, guys and all the best!
